Change food and water every day.
Clean cage out once a week.
Dont play with hamster too much, or it’ll get stressed.
Get a good food, dont give too much fruit or vegetables.
    Get a big enough cage.
Get toys for the hamster to explore.
Dont handle the hamster for at least 3 days so it can get used to its new home. If you handle it soon, it’ll get stressed out.
Dont pick it up right away when you can. First let him/her sniff you. Then stroke him/her. Lightly pick it up.
Get a wheel. Its good for exercise.
Make sure you have chew toys. It helps their teeth from overgrowing.

    Thats about it=) Good luck!

When you first get him, give him a couple of days to get used to his cage and his new home. You can talk to him and such, just don’t handle him right away.

When you do handle him, be aware that it may take some time for him to get used to you. You may be bitten or peed on, probably on more than one occasion. Just make sure you wash your hands before handling him so you don’t smell like food. And don’t put him back right away if he does either of those things, or he’ll learn them as a way to get back in his cage. Over time, he’ll get used to you.

    Some tips:
Give him lots of love and attention.
Make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Let him run around in a ball, or you can carefully hamster-proof a room and let him run around there. I make things my hamster can play and climb on and put her in the bathtub so she can run around freely but not be able to escape…with the drain covered, of course. Also make sure he has a good sturdy wheel. I recommend the plastic kind rather than the ones with metal bars, as their legs can get stuck and break between the bars.
Clean out the bedding in his cage about once a week, and spot clean in between if he has a "potty spot." The beddings most recommended are Carefresh and Yesterdays News. Wood shavings are okay if you use aspen. Cedar and pine chips have oils in them that are toxic to small hamsters, especially the cedar. Stay away from cedar at all costs.
Give him treats, but make sure they’re healthy! Some treats you can buy are really sugary. The occasional veggie (mine LOVES carrots) and treats from pet stores are best. Make sure you read the label on the back; they’ll always tell you how many you can give him per day. The ones you can give more of daily are healthier, but the others are just fine in moderation.
Change his food and water every day, and make sure to get rid of any veggies that he didn’t eat from the day before.
Spot clean the cage a couple times a week, and clean out the bedding weekly.
Give him plenty of things to chew on! I tend to deviate away from the wood ones for fear of splinters. Mine have always loved Carrot Crunchies and Cheesie Chews that you can get at Walmart.
Make sure he stays clean, but never give him a bath! If he does get dirty, wipe him off with a wet paper towel and dry him carefully. Giving them baths gets rid of the natural oils in their skin and they can get really sick.
Find a vet in your area that has experience with hamsters before anything happens, so you’re ready in case of an emergency. If something does go wrong and you get that feeling that it could be bad, trust your instincts and see the vet! They’re usually pretty inexpensive for small animals.

Come to us with any other questions or concerns you might have :)

    Good luck!
