I am going to get a hamster soon and I would like to know how to take care of it. I already have a pretty good idea. This is what I have heard to do.
-replace bedding every week and half
-make sure they have a wheel for exercise
-it is best to take them out of their cage and let them rome in a ball or hold them.
-don’t use some plastic houses because they can chew through certain areas.
-the tubing that they run through in the cage can sometimes break apart where they are put together. The hamster could also chew through this.
-make sure they have food and water.
-can only have certain vegetables or fruits because some of them can cause them to be sick.
-let their body’s adjust to any kind of new food or treat.
-make sure they have something to chew on to keep their teeth trimmed because they constantly grow.
-give them a wooden hut to sleep in and chew on if they choose.
-some kind of chew toy. toilet paper rolls work well because they can crawl and chew on them.
If you have any other information for me besides what I put, that would be great! If you have any pictures of not very expensive things for it also that would be great! I am planning on going to petco for most of the stuff but may go to my local pet store for some little extra stuff. Pictures are very great! Tell me anything and everything you know.
replace bedding every week put hamster in the ball or another cage while cleaning it cause, you’ll have to soak it in scrub it down in warm water.make sure you clean the wheel, and food bowl.
let them go in the ball for like 15-30 mins. i put (honey) in the ball at least twice a day so she doesn’t feel scrunched up in her cage. she will learn how to use it. she’ll run in to things it’s okay though. umm and one thing i’ve learn today is put tape on the lid of it because, the lid can pop open. (that happened to mine today. if freaked me out i was so worried she was behind the couch) i got her.
make sure water is room temperature
the can have strawberries, bananas, and peaches. broccoli, carrot. make sure you cut the fruit/vegetables small.
they might chew on the cage. and that bad for them so if they don’t chew on the roll or chewie blocks (like mines doesn’t) go to the pet store and ask them.
i got my hammy from petco to. the teddy bear hamster is the best to get cause, they aren’t as aggressive. and probley wont bite you (my hammy hasnt yet yay lol)

oh and she used that yellow puff thing and moved it by the watter and slept on it lol how cute
You may have to change bedding every week, not every week and a half, take out wet spots daily. Let the hammy adjust to its new environment for *at least* 24 hours before you try to handle it, otherwise it might be very stressful for your hammy. No pine or cedar shavings, they are dangerous to your hammy’s respiratory system. I would advise against getting a hamster from Petco, they are usually not socialized and some are sick. Good luck, best wishes.

I have a hamster and so i now replace bedding every week it will start to smell bad if you don’t, don’t give it a running ball it will stress out your hamster, give it food pelts if you don’t it will not have a good diet and if it is a dwarf hamster then you cannot give it fruit and if its not then gist don’t give it acidic fruit, and for the running wheel buy it wen you buy the hamster (to make sure it is the rite size),if your hamster starts to scratch itself the look on line for a mite treatment that you can do at home (i do this for my hamster),oh and do not pick up the hamster for at lest a week, rest you already no so good luck.

Hamster lover and owner!
First of all, do not get a ball for them. They feel trapped. How would you feel in a little ball??? I have a critter trail cage. It has a little place on the top for it to sleep, which is small and should be cleaned every other day. The bottom only needs to be cleaned like every two weeks. They do need a wheel to exercise. You should take it out to run on your bed or something. They eat regular hamster food and carrots, and cucumber they really like. Make sure they have constant access to food and water. Try to give them some carrots or cucumbers every night so it can be healthy and live longer. If yours survives at least for one year, then you are doing a pretty good job! And getting a hamster is good! They are put in a cage where no other people can touch them, there fore they have a less chance of being sick. I got my hamster from petco and I’ve had it for 2 and a half years. Good luck with you little buddy!!

Very good information you have there. You seem like you’ve done alot of research.
I have a little tip for bedding, don’t use cedar or pine wood chips because it causes respiratory problems. If you are getting a hamster, don’t get it from PetSmart or Petco, they abuse their animals and will most likely sell you a faulty hamster.
Oh also, never feed your hamster citrus fruit, it kills them, it happened to my hamster ):
