otherwise healthy hamster losing all of his fur?

Okay, so my hamster is losing all of his fur, i have searched numerous websites including this one and none of the reasons are adding up

its not mites or any sort of bug, he is still very active and eating and drinking properly, he is just losing his fur? I had switched his food to kibbles and now have moved back to seeds hoping this might help? he is almost 2 years old so he isn’t too old yet. He isnt sick, nothing is wrong with him despite the fact he is losing his fur. is this something i should be concerned about? i have a dog, this couldnt pass to him could it?

When I had a hamster he started losing his fur when he was getting old and sorry to say he passed away. You say he is almost 2 years old but how old was he when you got him was he a baby? or did you buy him from a pet store because you never know the real age then. Also most hamsters have a maximum of 3 years lifespan sadly most die at 2 years. They have very short lifespans. I say make youe hamster comfy and bidem farewell. Sorry about the bad news.

2 years old for any hamster means he’s getting a bit old. What type of hamster is it? Part of aging for many hamsters does include losing their fur sometimes.

What type of bedding is he on? Cedar is irritating to the lungs and skin of hamsters, and pine can cause the same reaction sometimes. CareFresh is very mild and you may consider switching his bedding to see if it clears up. Some hamsters can develop a sensitivity to certain bedding over time, or perhaps his cage just needs a good clean.

I have a dwarf hamster that must have his cage cleaned religiously every week and I can only use CareFresh or he starts losing patches of fur. Once I figured this out and stuck to it, he grew it all back.

Hope you get it worked out :)

    Hi,
Well a hamster can only live for 2-3 years. And when a hamsters is loosing his/she fur that might mean it will die soon. Once i had a mouse and it started to lose it’s fur and it died about a week or two later. And I that it is the same for hamsters. I really hope i am wrong about that so your haster doesn’t die!!
    Hope I helped!
