Whilst hamsters are quite resilient critters, they can, as with all things become ill. What is worrying, is that they are quite good at hiding the signs of hamster illness too, so you will need to learn your pet’s mannerisms and habits well to spot the signs. Here is a brief guide to some of the more common issues.

Abscesses are an issue for many hamsters, and tend to occur if they have been a little too excited and cut their skin. However, they often occur in the mouth, from food injury. Watch for your hamster holding on to its food in the cheek pouches for an extended amount of time.

The problem can be easily and quickly fixed by your vet, who simply drains the abscess providing immediate relief.

As with any mammal, diarrhea can be a problem if left untreated. Usually as a result of too many fresh vegetables, switching them to a diet of dry food and giving them access to plenty of water will usually resolve the issue within a couple of days.

However, diarrhea can be a symptom of wet tail; which can be extremely dangerous to your hamster’s health. Before jumping to conclusions however, check for signs of lethargy, a loss of appetite, a ruffled coat and a humped back.

Caused by stressed most often; due to cage crowding or a sudden dietary change, wet tail can be treated well if spotted early enough. If you suspect this hamster illness, be sure to visit your vet at the earliest opportunity.

There are other signs that your hamster may be ill; so things to look out for each day are discharge from the eyes and/or nose, sneezing, and huddling in a corner.

Looking after a hamster is quite easy, and hamster illness is really quite rare; just be a responsible owner however, and all should be fine.

First of all, the mother will not eat her babies unless a human touches them. Second of all, the mother will do all the caring for them if you don’t want to. She will breast feed until they are old enough to eat on their own. What you need to do is put the food on the bottom of the cage and the water bottle so that they can reach it from the bottom floor. When they get older…I think about a month old, you need to seperate them into seperate cages because hamsters are very territorial! At least seperate the males from females so they don’t make even more babies! Good luck!
Also, avoid cleaning their cage for a while because if the mother feels her babies are in any danger she will kill them. You should not really even go near the cage for a while…

Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster Toys are the hottest toy for Christmas 2009, it is the must-have holiday toy. They are are the hottest craze among kids age of 3 or 4 and expected to be the most popular toy of the year. BUT… Zhu Zhu Pets are playing the disappearing game. As we close in for the Christmas Holiday the Zhu Zhu pet it is getting more difficult to find and expensive.

These cute robotic creatures melted many hearts, but I had a hard time this Black Friday finding any zhu zhu pets for my kids. Toys R Us had just a 100 for the lucky first in line. I was able to get one, after standing on line for about 2 hrs! I decided I’m not running around town collecting all the pets I need one by one, so I went to Amazon. Yes, of course I paid more but it was worth the peace of mind knowing my kids won’t be disappointed this Christmas Holiday.

Amazon sells Zhu Zhu pets hamster toys for well over $20. It is the best chance of still picking them up in time for the Christmas Holiday. I strongly recommend you don’t wait, especially if your child or grandchild really has their heart set on this toy.

So, you may be wondering, what exactly is the great allure? Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster Toys were formerly called ‘go go pets’. They are amazing toy hamsters that are an engaging and stimulating to children. These little hamster toys look like the real thing but don’t make a mess and can be ignored for as long as you want without them dying or running off. I think they are extremely popular due to the fact that, this is the world’s first innovative, realistic, interactive, plush, and artificially intelligent hamster that talks and moves around in their own play sets.

There are 5 Zoo Zoo Pets, each hamster has its own unique personality and makes whimsical sounds. The kids can’t help but just love them!

*Chunk is the laid-back surfer hamster who is famous for chillin’ out, hangin’ back and layin’ low.
*Pipsqueak she loves to play, explore, run and slide.
*Squiggles he’s a hamster on a mission: Explore Galore, then explore some more.
*Numnums her higly trained sniffer can detect a carrot from a mile away, so stand back and watch her search to find some munchies.
*Patches is the Zhu Zhu pet that is only available as part of a bundled package. The most widely available packages, includes the Funhouse or hamster House Starter Set. Patches is darker yellow in color with a large white patch on its back. Patches loves the flowers and in explore mode, goes about hunting them out. Fortunately Patches will be available in single packs starting November, and this November we will see the release of four new zhu zhu pets Jilly, Winkie, Nugget, and Scoodles.

Zhu Zhu pets are built with two modes;

* The Loving Mode which allows kids to pet them, love them, then hear them squeak and chatter back.
*The Explore Mode the pets drive around in little cars, zip up ramps and spin down slides, run in their hamster wheels, and get into all sorts of crazy situations.

Their artificial intelligence even allows them to know what room of their hamster habitat they are in.They make toilet-flushing or teeth-brushing sounds when they enter the bathroom and sleeping noises and alarm-clock sounds when they go into their bedroom.

The Zu Zu Pets Hamster Toys has multiple accessories available for purchase. Kids love to collect and connect them all to create their own customized hamster habitats.

Here are just a few of the many accessories available for purchase:

• Hamster funhouse
• Hamster wheel and tunnel
• Hamster-mobile and garage
• Spiral slide and ramp
• Adventure ball
• Surfboard and sleep dome
• Skateboard and U-turn
• Pet bed and blanket sets.

Anyway, if you don’t feel like hunting all over town for the Zhu Zhu Pets your kids are probably begging for, you can turn to Amazon. Wal- Mart is always sold out, but Amazon seems to have plenty of dealers selling these toys for a bit more money.

I am going to be getting my first hamster and I got a glass aquarium with a wire top. Since I’m new at hamsters, I have no clue how the bottle goes on. Can it hook on the top, or will I have top purchase something else for the water? I also read that water dishes are not good to have.

There are hangers and suction cups sold in larger pet stores which serve this purpose. If you can’t find any, I’ve had luck with those adhesive velcro strips. Simply stick one side to the glass and one side to the bottle.

Water dishes aren’t recommended because hamsters can kick in shavings, toys, dust, food, and even knock it over. As we know, being in water or soaked bedding for long periods of time can trigger illness and even the death of your hamster. Even if your hamster didn’t tip it over, the debris in the water would quickly foul and harbor bacterial infestations.

Oh, I forgot to say they’re both teddy bear hamsters.

Dpeends on the hamster, dwarf hamsters should be better if you take them and just let them meet in your hands or somewhere, then if they dont fight put them in the cage and just watch out incase.

Syrians are never supposed to be with eachother/in the same cage. They usually want to kill eachother.

Ok so i think hamsters are really cute and i might get 1 for christmas. I wanted to know all the stuff that you have to do to keep a hamster alive and well? Im not going to want to to spend 30 mins every day cleaning his cage. How often do you have to clean out there cage? How big do they get? Can you add a link to a pic of the biggest they might get and the smallest they might be as an adult? How much do they cost? Including hamster, cage, fancy water bottle thing, and exersize equitment (give individual prices)? How long do they live? Do they like to just stay in there cage or do they like to crawl all over you and play? Do they live longer with another hamster? What are the chances of 2 of them having hamsterlets? If you have a hamster, are they just fantasic!?!

Anything else would help! Thanks guys!

Ok you only have to clean the cage once a week. Teddy Bears are usually 2 to 3 inches and a Dwarf hamster can get about to 1 to 2 inches. They live about 2 to 3 years and if you take care of them well, maybe even longer. A Dwarf hamster is a little mean so if you want a hamster that you can play with and hold you should probably get a Teddy Bear they usually sell them at PetCo. Teddy Bear Hamsters cost around 10 dollars dwarf hamsters and the other species are about 15 dollars. You can get a cheep cage at a little Pet Store I have a 10 gallon tank it was about 20 dollars PetsMart has cages about 17 to 25 dollars that are good sizes. Water bottles are like 8 dollars and food bowls are like 2 bucks or cheaper but PetsMart has a cage that’s like 20 dollars and it has a food bowl a wheel and a watter bottle. hamsters like to be in the ball which you can get for like 6 bucks food and litter is under 10 dollars. Oh and treats are under 5 dollars and you HAVE to get them wood not just any wood but they sell them at PetsMart or PetCo for like 3 bucks it keeps the hamsters teeth from growing and the teeth grow non stop if you have a female and a male chances of them having babies are like %100. They usually don’t last longer with another hamster. I have two hamsters and the Teddy bear is nicer and is so fun to have and my Dwarf Hamster hates being picked up :p. If you see any thing wrong you can take them to a vet just go on the internet and they give you a list of things that you HAVE to see the hamster doesnt have. Well thats pretty much all if you have more questions you can try the internet. Good luck

I had hamsters for a while now. I recently acquired a new hamster. I didn’t know it was pregnant until it gave birth to 4 babies(actually, there were 5 babies but one of them is dead when it was delivered by the mother). Of course, I researched everything about hamsters including the breeding and nursing part in hamster care. I think I can take care of the babies

Now, as I said, there are 4 babies. When hamsters give birth, like all mammals, there are some blood that will remain on the babies, right? On one of the hamsters, a piece of wood shaving(that I use as bedding) got glued/stuck on its forehead becozf the blood. The shaving does not block out the eyes of the hamster. Just the forehead. I was wondering if I should remove it and how? Because I’m afraid that it will not be healthy at all for the baby hamster. How do i get it out of the hamster’ds forehead wuthout leaving my scent on it and making the mother eat it?

They’re only 2 days old Syrian hmaster babies.

mum should do her job eventually and get it off herself… don’t worry about it too much it won’t bother the little fellar too much…
