How to make the switch from Dwarf Hamsters to Syrian Hamsters?

Posted on Nov 05, 2009 under dwarf hamsters | 4 Comments

I’ve only kept dwarf hamsters, but now I’m going to foster Syrian Hamsters. My local Humane Society just had a bust and has a lot of small pets on their hands they need help with. I’m pretty good with Dwarf hamsters, but have never had a Syrian Hamster of my own. Are the rules the same? Anything I should know?

The rules of taking care are the same. The only differences (which you would be already knowing) are –

Syrians are solitary, so strictly one to a cage to prevent vicious fights.

They are more friendly and easier to tame than dwarfs.

They would need a bigger cage and bigger of all other hamster stuff.

Once tamed, they are tame for life unlike dwarfs which require regular handling.

    They are NOT the same.

-Syrians must live /alone/, so you need one cage per Syrian.

-They are not as fast as dwarves.

-They are more likely to bite than most dwarfs.
