How much will it cost for our Dwarf hamsters to get put down at the vets?
Posted on Feb 02, 2010 under dwarf hamsters | 15 CommentsWe have four dwarf hamsters that we have had for about 6 months now. But suddenly two of the larger ones and one small one are all picking on and constantly attacking the last little one.
They were all bought together and, although we love them and would hate to see them gone, we can’t see them hurt, or maybe kill each other.
We think giving them to a pet shop would mean they simply become snake food, and I really don’t think I could do that.
Any ideas?
Its simple- buy another cage, and the little one can live like a king in his own big cage =]

Get a second cage for the last one. You can even set the cages by one another so the single one can see the others.

Why dont you get another cage and separate them ?- there are some good deals in pet stores and on ebay or if you have a big cage divide it

Here is a few ideas that i hope that u take into consideration.
1 ; Get a different cage for the little dwarf hamster and give him a few tunnels
2 ; Give into shelter
3 ; Sell the little one to a nice person
4 ; Put it down
I hope u don’t do number 2 or 4 because they are harsh and i would not do it ; i think number 1 is the best choice ; good luck.

Have you thought about checking with your local rspca or animal rescue centre? they take in hamsters for this reason and will rehome him/her to a home which wont give them as snake food!
Search on the rspca or type in ’small animal rescue in …’ or ‘hamster rescue centre in…’
I dont see why you’d have to get rid of all of them, take the littlest one out and put either in another cage or just rehome that one – because either way, if you rehome all of them you’ll have to separate that last little one from them.
You could also ask around friends see if they want to take him on, or maybe advertise on preloved?
But for the answer to the main question, my syrian hamster when she had wet tail cost about £9 to put down – and they didnt charge vet fees which could be upto about £20 and is up to the vet if they’ll charge or not. So, it’ll be more costly to put them all down than to rehome to someone who will love them!

You don’t to get them put down. Get another cage for the little one. Separate them. Dwarf hamsters are known for getting along, but sometimes they don’t like each other. Getting another cage will be about the same cost as getting a hamster put down, and you still get to keep the hamster with a new cage. Visit therunningwheel.webs.com for more info on hamsters.

If they are healthy it would not be right to kill them all. I think as has been said, separating them, and not bringing them out to play together, or at least the ones that don’t get on, is the best answer. Maybe the two small ones would get on together, and the larger of the small was only picking on the small because of peer pressure from the two large, to distract from itself, or a pecking order.
Isolating the two large and the larger of the smaller, may mean the two large start to pick on the third.
Maybe try different combinations to see if the two small get on together. Just monitor events closely, I’m sure another cage won’t break the bank.

i wouldn’t put them down, maybe you could find some friends who would each take one……But if you really have too…..it would probably be $32 for one hamster to be put down

I think you should get the ones that play together well a seperate cage. If they were not in the same cage when bouhght i would leave them apart.

sPLIT THEM UP, OR contact a charity to take them, a vet will not put down a hamster just because you have lost interest.

Hi separate them. It’s because they are at maturity now. They fight to the death so be careful. They will eventually fight each other. I gave some of my hamsters to the pet shop, they don’t become snake food, they sell them on. But if you do give them to the pet shop tell them they are fighting. This happened to me with my hamsters and i separated them they were happy. But it would mean 4 different cages. So just give 2 to the pet shop and keep two of them but separate them.

Please don’t have them killed just because of a natural fight! Split them up into pairs or singles, although I understand 4 cages would be a lot. Pet shops usually do the best they can to resell/rehome for free a small pet (I have worked in one). If you can’t look after 4, please approach a pet shop or friends or put an ad somewhere
