How could i give my hamsters a long and healthy life?

I’ve(I) had tons of pets before! But i’ve never had hamsters. I just bought a couple last week and i want to know how i could give them a happy and healthy life. Can u please tell.Thanx

How to tame:

1.) Hold your hamster for about 5 minutes, the next day, 10, then 15, etc.
2.) When your hamster is in your hands, pet him, talk in whispers, or give him a treat.

Taming is how you can get your hamster to not bite your hands and to be your pal. Some hamsters may bite if your hands smell like food or lotion.

My basic tips:

Cage Cleaning:
- To clean a cage, you need to put your hamster in a safe separate cage or bucket, away from any other pets.

- Remove all bedding from the bottom of the cage.
- Clean out the bottom of the cage with dishwasher soap and water.
- Put in new, clean bedding into the cage. (Aspen bedding is recommended) Make sure there is at least 3 inches.

Food and Water:
Your hamster should have a hanging water bottle, such as this one:

You should change the water every day or every other day.

Your hamster should have a Food Dish, such as this one:

Your hamster should have food in his dish at all times, changed weekly. Fiesta™ and Kaytee™ brand foods are recommended.

Do not feed your hamster:
- Rhubarb
- Onions
- Citrus Fruits
- Iceberg Lettuce
- Acid foods

Never feed your hamster too many fruits or veggies, because it will cause Wet Tail Disease. Wet Tail is also caused by poor living conditions.

Cages:
Your cage should have at least 2 stories, like this one:

Bathing:
It is never good to wash your hamster in water, due to stress levels. Giving your pet a dust bath with Chinchilla sand is good to do once a week.

Chew Toys:
Hamsters are part of the rodent family, so they have rapidly growing incisors (front teeth). They need something to chew on so they can wear their teeth down (otherwise, they’ll grow too long and cause health issues later on) Never put hot sauce on the cage bars.

I really want a Syrian hamster.
Were should I go that is easy to locate and not extrememly expensive to buy one?
How to tell if it’s healthy?

I have a Syrian hamster, too! Pashmina!

The best place to buy them is PetSmart, but of course, your local pet store is fine, too. And hamster’s are ONLY $5 to $12! But with the supplies you need and the cage, it’s gonna come to about $70 in total.

Signs of a healthy hamster:
-Clean bright eyes
-Soft fur
-Full, slightly rounded body
-Curious, active behaviour
-Eats and drinks normally
-Well-formed droppings with no diarrhea

Things to watch for:
-Blood in urine
-Overfrown front teeth
-Bare patches in the fur
-Diarrhea or wetness around the tail area (called "wet-tail")
-Lethargic behavior
-Weight loss, not eating or drinking normally
-Sneezing; discarge from the eyes, nose or mouth

*If you notice any of the signs above, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

i was thinking of getting another teddy bear hamster and put it in this 10 gallon tank i still have when i had fish

Look for a hamster that is alert. Their eyes should be clear and they should be clean. They should not be injured, have feces anywhere on them, and they should have a healthy curiosity. They might be sleeping when you go into the store, but when they pull out the tank to give you a look they should jump right to attention. Don’t tap on the glass to wake them up.

pets at home is very good for hamsters and also hamster products, i got mine there and am very pleased that i did because she is healthy and lively.

Also the price of them there is not expensive at all, however you could get them cheaper form a breeder but i wanted to get mine from there because they are a respectable company that takes good care of the animals and doesn’t mistreat them in anyway

Yeah, any good retail pet shop. If you live in Reading, then there should be a Pet’s at Home nearby or some other well known pet shop. Avoid buying from breeders because you can’t always tell which ones are healthy. Pet shops, by law, have to sell healthy animals.

A couple good brands of food are kaytee and carefresh. Make sure any food you get is 16% protein.

If Pine Bedding is not healthy for hamsters, why is it sold?

Last year, My teddy bear hamster died after being sickened by Hartz natural pine bedding.

Because it’s cheap. People like cheap things, and they will buy it. Personally I use CareFresh. I don’t use anything else.

Every now and them get a big huge cardboard box and let her explore it. In the wild hamsters live in miles of holes and crannies and dens

food- add variety like tiny pieces of nuts, fresh veges next day, a new type of grain two days later…
and they like clean environment and clean water.

How to check if a hamster is healthy?

Just ways to check if it is healthy without going to the vet?
BTW it’s almost half a year oldd

Checks to do:
*Observe their general behaviour and overall condition.
*It should be active, alert, energetic and playful (not all the time – but at night as they are nocturnal)
*Check the coat and make sure that is nice and smooth, not dull. Hairloss can have many causes including skin infections, mites and stress. If your hamster is losing hair see your vet for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.
*Look at its eyes. They should be bright and clear, not watery.
*Check its breathing. A healthy hamster’s breathing is clear and there should be no discharge from its nose. The area around the nostrils should be dry and not have a crusty look.
*Check its behind. Make sure it is clean. If it appears wet or dirty, the hamster may have diarrhoea, which is a symptom of wet tail. This is very difficult to cure, you will have to take it to the vet.
*It should have a broad and round body. This indicates that it is eating well.
*Check for lumps or bumps on it’s body.
*There is a scent gland on either hip, if it is blocked then it can look like a scab. (They get more prominent when hamsters are on heat), if they become blocked, swollen, weepy or change drastically in appearance see a vet.
*Abscesses – These are soft pus filled swellings, often caused by bites, scrapes or foreign bodies getting under the skin. If your hamster has an abscess, clip the fur around the wound and bathe the animal daily in a lukewarm salt solution (one teaspoon of salt to one pint of water) making sure you keep the head out the water. Keep the fur short until the pus has drained away and the skin flattens again. If you are not confident about doing this or if there are no signs of improvement after two or three days see your vet as antibiotics may be required to treat a bacterial infection or it may be something more serious such as cancer.
*Overgrown teeth – if your hamster stops eating or is not eating as much check its teeth to make sure they are not overgrown or misaligned. Teeth clipping is simple to do at home but you have to get your vet to show you how.
Half a year is young to middle aged for a hammy, hopefully you can provide all your hamsters needs great question – and idea. Knowing the problems and spotting them before they get serious is important when looking after animals – hope this helped!
