What Hamster Illness Is Common?

Posted on Oct 16, 2009 under dwarf hamsters, hamsters, healthy hamsters, how to care for hamsters, how to choose a healthy hamster| No Comment

Whilst hamsters are quite resilient critters, they can, as with all things become ill. What is worrying, is that they are quite good at hiding the signs of hamster illness too, so you will need to learn your pet’s mannerisms and habits well to spot the signs. Here is a brief guide to some of the more common issues.

Abscesses are an issue for many hamsters, and tend to occur if they have been a little too excited and cut their skin. However, they often occur in the mouth, from food injury. Watch for your hamster holding on to its food in the cheek pouches for an extended amount of time.

The problem can be easily and quickly fixed by your vet, who simply drains the abscess providing immediate relief.

As with any mammal, diarrhea can be a problem if left untreated. Usually as a result of too many fresh vegetables, switching them to a diet of dry food and giving them access to plenty of water will usually resolve the issue within a couple of days.

However, diarrhea can be a symptom of wet tail; which can be extremely dangerous to your hamster’s health. Before jumping to conclusions however, check for signs of lethargy, a loss of appetite, a ruffled coat and a humped back.

Caused by stressed most often; due to cage crowding or a sudden dietary change, wet tail can be treated well if spotted early enough. If you suspect this hamster illness, be sure to visit your vet at the earliest opportunity.

There are other signs that your hamster may be ill; so things to look out for each day are discharge from the eyes and/or nose, sneezing, and huddling in a corner.

Looking after a hamster is quite easy, and hamster illness is really quite rare; just be a responsible owner however, and all should be fine.

How do I keep my hamster happy and healthy?

Posted on Mar 03, 2010 under healthy hamsters| 3 Comments

I’ve had my hamster for about 11 months, and she recently seemed to get bored with me. I want to keep her happy and healthy, but recently some things have come up and I haven’t been able to bond with her.

1) How do I keep my hammie happy?
2) Is there any way for me to get her used to me again?
3) Is she healthy?
4) Any suggestions about ways for me to play with her?

thanks!

a wheel and the a ball
the wheel she can play all day on
the ball you have to supervise all the time
The hamsters are smart and they can figure out a way to escape from the ball
Every now and them get a big huge cardboard box and let her explore it. In the wild hamsters live in miles of holes and crannies and dens

food- add variety like tiny pieces of nuts, fresh veges next day, a new type of grain two days later…
and they like clean environment and clean water.

How to check if a hamster is healthy?

Posted on Mar 01, 2010 under healthy hamsters| 2 Comments

There’s nothing wrong with it or anything :)
Just ways to check if it is healthy without going to the vet?
BTW it’s almost half a year oldd :D

Checks to do:
*Observe their general behaviour and overall condition.
*It should be active, alert, energetic and playful (not all the time – but at night as they are nocturnal)
*Check the coat and make sure that is nice and smooth, not dull. Hairloss can have many causes including skin infections, mites and stress. If your hamster is losing hair see your vet for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.
*Look at its eyes. They should be bright and clear, not watery.
*Check its breathing. A healthy hamster’s breathing is clear and there should be no discharge from its nose. The area around the nostrils should be dry and not have a crusty look.
*Check its behind. Make sure it is clean. If it appears wet or dirty, the hamster may have diarrhoea, which is a symptom of wet tail. This is very difficult to cure, you will have to take it to the vet.
*It should have a broad and round body. This indicates that it is eating well.
*Check for lumps or bumps on it’s body.
*There is a scent gland on either hip, if it is blocked then it can look like a scab. (They get more prominent when hamsters are on heat), if they become blocked, swollen, weepy or change drastically in appearance see a vet.
*Abscesses – These are soft pus filled swellings, often caused by bites, scrapes or foreign bodies getting under the skin. If your hamster has an abscess, clip the fur around the wound and bathe the animal daily in a lukewarm salt solution (one teaspoon of salt to one pint of water) making sure you keep the head out the water. Keep the fur short until the pus has drained away and the skin flattens again. If you are not confident about doing this or if there are no signs of improvement after two or three days see your vet as antibiotics may be required to treat a bacterial infection or it may be something more serious such as cancer.
*Overgrown teeth – if your hamster stops eating or is not eating as much check its teeth to make sure they are not overgrown or misaligned. Teeth clipping is simple to do at home but you have to get your vet to show you how.
Half a year is young to middle aged for a hammy, hopefully you can provide all your hamsters needs :) great question – and idea. Knowing the problems and spotting them before they get serious is important when looking after animals – hope this helped! :)

What are some things I can do to keep my hamster healthy?

Posted on Feb 18, 2010 under healthy hamsters| 5 Comments

1) How often should I clean her cage / change her food / etc.?
2) How many hours should I play with her for?
3) How should I play with her?
4) What kind of snacks should I give her?
5) Anything else I should do to make her as healthy as possible?

I’m not saying she is sick, but I just want her to be really healthy.
Any other suggestions would help.

1. Definitely change the shavings and clean the cage at least once a week. Water should be changed daily, but food should be changed by sight. You don’t need to throw out the food still in the cage, just top it up as needed. However, just because the bowl is empty doesn’t mean your hamster needs more food. Hamsters like to stash their food elsewhere around their cage, so take a look in the corners and whatnot before adding more food.

2. Spend at least an hour a day with your hamster to keep it socialized. A balanced hamster will welcome the attention, but unlike dogs, you don’t want to overdo it. Too much playing will stress it out.

3. Letting your hamster walk along your hands or crawl in your lap is good

4. hamsters get obese really easy, so any snacks you give should be healthy. Stick to fruits and vegetables, just make sure to find out which fruits and veggies are safe to feed your hamster.

5. Making sure your hamster gets enough exercise is essential to keeping it healthy and prolonging its life. An exercise ball is a great idea, and your hamster should spend half an hour to forty five minutes in it daily (out of direct sunlight, of course). Even more important is where you keep your hamster’s cage. Hamsters (namely teddy bears) get stressed out very easily, and constant stress shortens their life significantly, as well as increases their chance of getting wet tail.

Can I please have some advice/tips on how to choose a healthy pet hamster?

Posted on Feb 17, 2010 under healthy hamsters| 2 Comments

When I went to the pet store, they were all buried up sleeping so I couldn’t really tell. Anyway, could someone please help me on this? What should I look out for in particular (behavior, physical appearance, etc)? Thank you very much.

It depends on what kind your getting. I suggest you get a syrian hamster (aka golden hamster), they are best. How to get a healthy syrian aka golden hamster-

1) Is it hurt? Bleeding or scratched or even limping? Then it’s hurt and could possibly die. Try and get one that is not hurt in any way.

2) Is it way to fat or way to skinny? Try and get a fit one. The fitter the better!

3) is it acting sick? Sneezing, coughing, vomiting, or diarrhea? Then don’t get that one! Get very very VERY healthy one!

4) Is it all alone, with o few other ones, one other one, or a bunch of other ones? Has it ever been with other ones? Syrian hamsters can’t be kept together. I got mine and it had a partner, they seemed to hate each other, but my hamster was perfectly fine. Sometimes, they just get annoyed and bullied (but not seriously) when with others. So maybe it will be fine, it’s still better to get one that is alone. And do NOT get two or more golden hamsters unless your putting them in separate cages or are breeding them. How to breed them? I don’t know!

5) Is it active? It should be a little active, but they are mostly nocturnal, so not much. But if you poke at it or pet, it should twitch or get up and start moving around.

6) Is it eating and drinking? It really should be.

7) Hows it’s fur? It should be tip-top! If not, then get a hamster that has perfect fur (color doesn’t matter)!

8) Last but not least, do YOU like the hamster? Find one that has a color you like and a personality that its you! It is about to be your new little buddy!

Have fun with your new friend! Hope this helped!

My child was given 2 chinese hamsters now the heat has killed them ,why they were doing well .?

Posted on Feb 11, 2010 under healthy hamsters| 4 Comments

Healthy chinese hamsters since Jan 08 we had no air cond. we had fans they were doing well till this 99 degree heat came. They were on the wheel in the am then dead in the afternoon. why now the kids are crying.

That is sad. I am sorry to hear that =( That happened to one of my rats several years ago. In the future, I suggest keeping them in a wire cage (assuming you had them in a glass aquarium) with a fan running nearby. Also, you can freeze a plastic water bottle and lay it in the cage so they can lay near it and cool off on super hot days.

Syrian Hamsters for sale in boulder colorado?

Posted on Feb 05, 2010 under healthy hamsters| 2 Comments

Does anyone know of someone/somewhere you can get healthy Syrian hamsters in boulder (or near by)? I’ve heard bad things about Petco and Petsmart doesn’t carry Syrians.

Petco isn’t very kind to animals; they don’t feed them ANY veggies! Go on www.bunnybunch.org! The Bunny Bunch is a No Kill non-profit organization that saves small animals that were neglected or dumped. They have a few hamsters. Once you get to Bunny Bunch’s website, click "Adopt a Guinea Pig". TThen scroll down until you see some hamsters. Have a great time looking for hamsters!
