how to take care as in what do I do to make them comfortable
hamsters are easy to look after just have a big enough cage with
a wheel
food bowl
drinks bottle
bedding area
and a few toys in their for your hamster
try and play with it everyday but leave it for the first few days to get used to its surroundings you could also buy a hamster ball for it to go in for exercise and a place to put your hamster when you clean the cage
i would clean the cage out at least once a week
you can buy these hamster cleaning wipes (like baby wipes) to clean your pet if they get smelly
have fun if you decide to buy a hamster

What are the best healthy, but also good and tasty, treats for dwarf hamsters. ONLY DWARF! Or, you can just recommend the best food brands to consider. THEY HAVE TO BE HEALTHY, as well. Of course hamsters can’t eat certain things, so please don’t tell me anything with high sugar (or sugar at all) and all the ones with the BAD preservatives. Thanks.
insects
very healthy, and very tasty for them!
they have a whole lot of fun chasing and hunting, or atleast playing with them before they eat them
they go absolutely mental for things like mealworms
although fruits and veggies can also make good treats, too many can cause diarrhea, particularly in dwarf hamsters. Fruits especially are VERY high in sugar
remember, hamsters are NOT herbivorous

I have hamsters in any ages and those which aren’t adults yet, mostly die because they can’t breathe. They haver to breathe through their mouths and they hands and feet start to shake. What can I do to make it stop and save them?
Leave the baby hamsters with their mum and they won’t die. she will provide them with the nutritious milk and food – try giving them some proteins and good food

The dwarf hamster I just bought is 2 months old. She spends almost the whole day sleeping. hamsters are supposed to sleep at day and be active at night. And this hamster spends the night sleeping too. Occasionally she wakes up to eat and go on the wheel a little but goes back to sleep shortly after that.
I’m worried. Is my hamster sick?
No, not at all, your hamster is fine.
My hamster is a syrian, and we have had the gorgeous ginger fur ball 14 months. He sleeps all day, never uses his exercise wheel, and only gets up at night for food, drink, and a wee!!
Sometimes me and my husband will wake him at night and drag him out of his bed so he can get lots of exercise out of the cage, but I would not necissarily advice you to wake yours. Hamsters are VERY grumpy when woken and will deliver one hell of a bite, but fortunatly for us, Harry is incredibly laid back.
But despite the fact he is lazy, he is very healthy and happy. He has regular check ups at the vets and he gets a clean bill of health. So dont worry.

Okay. Here’s my problem. I’m 15, I’ve got 2 syrian hamsters, boy & a girl which live in my room and are a year old. They’re obv in seperate cages. One cage is just a single floor, with a wheel, a little house on the floor, its plastic bottom with metal bars(which my syrian loves to chew lol). the other is a bit bigger with a ladder and another plastic floor on the top. its got a house on the second floor, a wheel, and a tube going down to the bottom aswell. i want to replace the smaller cage with a new, better cage. I’ll have a cage left over.
I was thinking of getting two russian hamsters to take up the new cage. I have no problem with affording the upkeep, and time isn’t a problem.
I just don’t know whether they will keep me awake at night with 4 hamsters in their wheels, and if the new hamsters will take too long to tame and whether it will be too much effort and time to keep them all happy and healthy and clean.
With all this information taken into account, do you think I should keep the cage spare, or get the two new russian dwarf hamsters. And which cage should I put the dwarfs in if I do choose to get them?
Thanks V Much. p.s – how do i stop my hamsters chewing the bars of the cage. Thanksss!!!! xxx
If you get to russian hamsters you should get an extra cage anyway as 9/10 times they will fight.
I know people say that they can live together, but I have actually experienced it and they have always ended up being put into different cages, one actually killed another.
You can’t use a syrian cage anyway as they are much smaller and will be able to fit through the bars
To stop them chewing on the bars rub lemon or orange juice on them.
I would say ever keep it spare or get ONE other hamster
Hope I helped

I am getting a hamster in 4 days but I know alot about them but don’t know what they need. I am getting one hamster. Anyone plaese help.
First, you may want to do some other research, and borrow books or something. And look at this page, if you have a petsmart near, and decide what cage, food, etc to buy.
www.petsmart.com
Hamsters are tiny, nocturnal rodents covered from head to toe with different colours of fur. They are great pets to keep in a cage and are easy to take care of. If you would like to tame your hamster the best time to do so is when he is still young. The older he gets the harder it will be to make him trust people. Start by talking to your hamster and do not pick him up until you are sure he isn’t frightened of you. Hamsters will bite when they are frightened so be careful. If he shows any signs of being stressed, leave and try stroking him after a while. Cup your hands gently around the hamster to pick him up, or pick him up at the scruff of the neck, the way the mother hamsters will carry her babies when they are still young. It will take about three to four weeks to tame a hamster so be patient. Hamsters need a cage, food, water, a hiding place, toys and soft bedding materials.
For the cage, make sure it is not made of wood. The hamster would just eat his way through the cage, escape and might hurt himself. Never keep the cage near heaters, direct sunlight, on a fridge, next to a television or a radio. All these will harm the hamster and will cut his life expectancy down very much. Get the largest cage you can afford since the larger the cage is, the happier the hamster will be. Another great way to keep your hamster is in a glass tank. The hamster will not be able to gnaw his way out, and will not feel as cornered as the metal “prisons”. Ventilation is provided from the top, and a tray can be used at the bottom to ease the cleaning.
Hamsters will eat a variety of food such as apples, nuts, chicken, rice, eggs, hamster food, eggs, pasta, and bananas. Make sure you avoid any citrus fruits since they will be harmful to the hamsters. Make sure the hamster has a healthy diet with some fresh vegetables and fruit on every day. Store the store-bought hamster food in airtight containers in a dry dark place to ensure it stays fresh.
Fresh water should always be supplied to the hamster. The easiest way to do this is by getting a water bottle especially designed for hamsters. You can also use a bowl with fresh water, but make sure it is a heavy bowl so the hamster can’t tip it over and so you don’t have to refill the water as often. If the bowl tips over the bedding will also get wet and you will have to clean out the cage.
Hiding places are also important to the hamster. They love to hide under a log or inside a cardboard box. They will chew on the cardboard so something out of wood will be better. Don’t take the hamster out of the hiding place since he will feel safe to sleep in there and he needs a place of privacy.
hamsters like to play with at least one toy and a great one to get is a wheel. The metal ones will last much longer since he will probably bite it once in a while. Keep it oiled to ensure that it will not squeak and keep you up at night. Hamsters love getting a new toy, so instead of having many toys crammed into the cage, periodically give him a different one to play with. Keep the wheel inside the cage at all times though since it will help the hamster exercise. Good ideas for hamster toys are underground tunnels (such as a toilet paper roll on the bedding), swings, bridges, tubes, and mirrors.
The bedding material should be plain pine wood shavings, or saw dust or straw. Do not buy any scented materials since the hamster might develop an allergic reaction to those materials. Give the hamster at least 2 inches of the bedding to make sure he is comfortable. For nesting materials give the hamster paper flakes or shredded paper, but make sure it isn’t newsprint since that will contain harmful chemicals to the hamster. Paper is inexpensive and safe for the hamster.
Something to look out for is that the hamster doesn’t get temperature that is lower then 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If this happens, the hamster will start entering hibernation and the hamster may appear to be dead. Hibernation can last from just a few minutes to an entire week. Usually the hibernation will last about two or three days and the hamster will probably get up to feed about once every twelve hours. Hamsters have been mistaken for dead since their body temperature will drop a few degrees, their heart will only beat about 4 times per minute and they will have less then one breath per minute. So if you are in doubt whether your hamster is in hibernation or dead, make sure you bring him to the local pet store and don’t bury him by accident. If he is in hibernation keep fresh food near him for the time he feeds, and slowly increase the temperature back to normal to help him come out of the hibernation. Do not do this too quickly though because he might go into metabolic stress and they might die. The best way

But i asked him that i notice my hamster scratch sometimes..but he said it’s okay…Should i not be worried?
hamsters scratch themselves to ‘comb’ their fur … they do it before and after washing, and occasionally if they feel it starting to ‘pull.’ Hamsters have very thick coats with several layers, and when the ‘underfur’ gets caught on itself or on the upper layers, the hamster scratches to straighten it out.
When a hamster has fleas or mites, he’s scratching almost constantly and also biting his fur … and he may even bite you if he’s in enough distress. Most hamsters do not get fleas, however, because of the density of their fur. Be a good owner and don’t worry about your hamster scratching himself on occasion … but if he starts scratching frantically, then take him to the vet for a good checkup and ‘de-pesting’ … it could be fleas, it could be mites, or it could be a ’scratch’ that you can’t see but needs a vet’s help.

I’ve created a very large bin cage for my future office Robo hamsters. There are four at the pet store and I don’t really want to split them up. Does anyone have experience caring for a colony of four Robos? Will I have to clean their cage more than M,W,F (I won’t be in the office Sat and Sun)? I plan to use a hamster litter box in the corner. Thanks for your help.
you could get the four but u will have to clean the cage atleast once a week. and there will be more food and water needed. also u will need atleast 2 wheels or they wont get enuf excersise. but i warn u if they are not all the same sex then you will have loads of babies very very fast and it will be horrible. so just be careful but if they r all the same sex then go 4 it, dont always go by what the petstore people say cuz they assured me that mine was a girl and it turned out to be a boy.

I have just bought 2 chinese dwarf hamsters, 6 weeks old and from the same litter and the same sex, dwarf hamsters are happiest when kept in pairs unlike syrian ones.
… so they are getting along fine, no problems – I just want to make sure they don’t start fighting and prevent problems in the future – how do I prevent this from occuring, e.g. seperate beds..?? thankyou
Well, if they’re good now they should be set for life unless you add another hamster. Most likely, if they are like gerbils, they will sleep together, no problem. Just make sure you have to different beds/hiding spots at first. If they prefer to sleep together, then the others are unnecessary. If they sleep their separate ways, then leave it there. If they do start fighting (not occasionally, but all the time) You might need to separate them all together.
If you are looking for something good for bedding try getting this "critter fluff" stuff. It isn’t they bottom litter, but just a big thing of really soft material that they will make their beds out of. You just start a little separation, and they will make a bed out of it. My gerbils used to love it! Yet…they loved it so much they slept all day(which was actually good for us)
Also, just get one of the edible wooden huts. They can drag the stuff into it, have shelter, bond, and chew. It’s great. Good luck and hope that I helped.

I dont know when they where born but i had three dwarf hamsters together two where females and one was male . the mail i gave away and then like a week or so later i went to give my two females water and clean the cage and that is when i saw these little pig things so i looked to see which hamster had the signs of motherhood and seperated the other one in to its own cage leaving the momma and her 5 babies together in the cage she gave birth in. I dont have the father hamster does that matter and how can i tell how old the babies are? Also , how old do they have to before i can tell if they are boys or girls? and i check on them everyday to make sure they are alive and the mom is taking care of them but i havent touched them. well if someone could answer my questions it would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Do not touch the babies!!!
You can seperate the babies by gender when they reach 21 days old. Do not even atempt to clean the cage for at least 2 weeks.
To tell a boy and girl apart. Look where it’s privetes are.
There will be 2 "holes" if the holes are far apart then it’s a boy, if the holes are so close together it looks like one, they are girls.
